Executive Care by Marshall
Dr. Mullin’s stance of the importance of men’s health, stem from his own research and experience as a MD. With a collective shared opinion he agrees that: men are significantly less likely than women to see a doctor or report symptoms to a health care provider. Only 60 percent of men go to the doctor for a yearly, routine checkup, and 40 percent will not go until something is seriously wrong. Men are often perceived as the physically stronger gender because they are typically bigger and more muscular than women thanks to testosterone. However, when it comes to health, men are biologically weaker. Men are more likely to experience chronic health conditions earlier than women and have shorter lives. Men frequently view healthcare as a nuisance, as inefficient and an unpleasant experience. Most men do not feel comfortable discussing male issues with either a male or a female provider. Healthcare offers a one size fits all approach that does not take into account male specific goals, ambitions, lifestyles, impediments, and rarely addresses medication side-effect profiles that can crush a man’s defining characteristics. Twenty percent of men report seeing a doctor so their significant other or a loved one will stop nagging them.Fifty-nine percent of men report being anxious for 3 or more days in the past 2 weeks and 59% have been depressed. Men’s mental health issues are less effectively identified and managed due
to the differences in how men manifest their symptoms. Men behave differently than women when worried, scared, anxious, or depressed. The difference in presentation, societal pressures, and expectations have resulted in generations of men that are both physically and mentally unhealthy. The overall mortality rate is 41 percent higher for men than women, and it is higher for men for 8 out of 10 leading causes of death—including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States. Most prostate cancer can be effectively treated if identified early with routine lab testing.
